Here are some things to consider as we dive into a new school year. Remember, your students are a lucky lot, and are likely just as nervous and overwhelmed as you might be!
The best thing you can do at the start of every school year is to get to know your students and create a safe learning space. This is especially true for students new to the language and culture of the school. Only then can they begin to learn. Take the time to get to know one another. Take it slow. Have fun! The time and care you invest now in getting to know one another and setting a safe tone in your classroom will pay off in the long run! • Learn to pronounce everyone’s name. Learn about the origins of your student's names. (please don’t give students a nickname because their name is too hard for you) • Encourage and promote connections between classmates through group games, team building activities. • Build trust through a variety of games, activities, and conversations. • Check in through class meetings and one-on-one conversations: How do your students feel? What do they need? • Create class expectations together and display them on the wall. Consistency is key. • Connect with parents, especially parents of newcomers. Share your expectations with them so they are in the know. Keep them up to date on school activities, field trips, deadlines. It's easy to get lost at the beginning of the year as families settle in. Do your best to keep them in the loop. • Reach out to your school ELL support team (that's me!). Don't be afraid to ask for help. By working together we can create a safe learning space for your students and best support their needs as they settle into school life. There are no silly questions! Check out the next few sections for some more useful information. Good luck this month, and don't forget to have fun! :)
